Keeping rail workers health on track.

It is crucial that all rail workers undertake health assessment to ensure that they are deemed healthy and fit in order to perform their job safely and protect themselves, the public, fellow workers and the rail network.

Health assessment for rail workers aids in preventing ill-health, conditions, disorders or medical treatments that could potentially lead to an incident.

Rail safety work can involve complex tasks requiring perception, good judgment, responsiveness and sound physical capability. A range of medical conditions, as well as treatments, may therefore impair fitness to work. Health assessments are required for all critical and non-critical rail workers at pre-placement or when there is a change of risk category.

Health assessment is required for Category 1: High Level Safety Critical workers and Category 2: Safety Critical workers at the time of commencement, then:

  • every 5 years to age 50, then
  • every 2 years to age 60, then
  • every year

For Category 3: Non-Safety Critical workers, health assessment is required at the time of commencement, then:

  • at 40 years of age, then
  • every 5 years

Our Rail medicals are performed by an Authorised Health Professional (AHP) under the Rail National Accreditation Scheme.

Occuhealth is currently offering a 20% discount across all rail medicals, including Cat 1, Cat 2 and Cat 3, which include drug and alcohol screening.
