Risk-Based Hygiene Management Plan

Medical, OHS, Hygiene management, Hygiene, Hazards, Work hazard

Risk-based hygiene management planning (RBHMP) is a requirement of the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) for all mines sites to adhere to.  The RBHMP is intended to accurately describe all health hazards within operating environments and the controls required to prevent harm to the person’s from these health hazards.

RBHMP is an opportunity to meet legislative requirements by assessing:

  • What are your personnel actually and potentially exposed to?
  • How are they protected (or not) from those exposures?
  • What needs to be done for their protection in the short-term and long-term?
  • How do you confirm whether you got it right (or not) in relations to control implementations?
  • What do you have in place to continuously monitor and review?

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health criteria and the DMP document “RBHMP and CONTAM system procedures” used in conjunction with one another, allows for a sampling strategy to be produced that outlines the number of samples to be taken on quarterly basis by companies.  This sampling quota is then submitted to the DMP. Quotas are set for the financial year, with four sampling periods. Sites are required to enter their health and hygiene related data directly into the Safety Regulations System (SRS)
