Across all industries approximately 40% of injuries are musculoskeletal injuries associated with manual tasks (National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, 1998).
Ergonomics is the design of equipment, processes and surrounding environments so that tasks and activities required of employees are within their limitations and also allows staff to work to the best of their capabilities.
In the workplace the application of ergonomics aims to promote health, efficiency and well being in employees. For prevention of accidents and injuries in mining, the aim is to identify and manage the risks associated with manual handling, long-hauls, transport, continuous machine usage and equipment in mines.
Each task has its risks which are the elements leading directly to injury or loss. It is imperative that the risk management process be effectively implemented at the workplace. A comprehensive ergonomics program approach, which involves workers, assisted by an ergonomist or occupational safety and health (OHS) professional with skills in ergonomics, is the most effective means of reducing exposure to musculoskeletal injury risks.
Every mining workplace is different so there will be some variation in the most suitable approach to implement and administer. At Occuhealth we can design an Ergonomic Assessment for your individual business needs and we are available for onsite appraisals.
