Get maximum protection out of your respirator filters.

Wearing a respirator to protect the body from contamination is essential for some workers. Wearing it correctly is one thing, but without proper use of the filters, the effectiveness of the respirator may be significantly affected, leaving the wearer at risk of harm.

Filter basics

Particle filters rely on the electrostatically charged fibres to trap particulates within the filter. Whether a disposable particulate mark or a reusable particulate cartridge, when the particulate filters get clogged up and become harder to breathe through, it’s time to change them.

If wearing a disposable particulate respirator, the entire respirator must be discarded if it becomes difficult to breathe through, damaged or very dirty.

Gas and vapour filters rely on sorbent material, such as carbon, to “soak up” the gas and vapour molecules. These filters start to let contaminant through once their sorbents become saturated, so once you can smell or taste any contaminant, or you notice irritation, it’s time to change your gas/vapour filters.

If using combination particulate, gas and vapour filters, remember that the particulate filter and gas/vapour filters are working differently, so you must be aware of the condition of all filters.

When not in use, re-usable respirator and filters should be kept clean and dry, and away from oil and sunlight and any contaminated atmospheres to avoid deterioration. The carbon inside the gas/vapour filter will absorb contaminants from the general environment if left lying around. A re-sealable storage bag is ideal for storage.

To be safe, as a general rule, once a filter has been removed from its original packaging, it should be discarded within 6 months. Tip: when you open a new gas or vapour filter, write the date on the label to make it easier to see when 6 months has passed.

All respirator filter manufacturers provide guidance and product support on the correct wearing and use of respirators and their filters, and further guidance is provided by the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1715 (2009).
