Functional Capacity Assessments

A Functional Capacity Assessment is a series of tests that determine the ability of an individual worker to perform the physical tasks required by their role in the workplace.

The assessment may also be undertaken to assist a worker in returning to a job after injury or a period of medical leave, by establishing which specific light duties can be safely allocated to the worker concerned, and the degree and nature of rehabilitation that may be necessary before a worker can return to pre-injury tasks.

A functional capacity assessment can include testing and observations on:

  • Physical strength
  • Stamina
  • Range of Movement
  • Tolerance to functional activities including lifting, carrying, reaching, sitting
  • Stability of joints and flexibility
  • Cardiovascular fitness test
